The beans quickly grow into the titular sock-eating plants, though it takes a while for the boys to realize Stanley is behind Michael's socks disappearing. As explained in book 1, Michael had sent away for a set of "Amazing Beans" (and then forgot about having done so), one of which he plants and the other of which he gives to Norman to shut him up for a while. A children's series by Nancy McArthur, it follows the lives of brothers Michael and Norman and their pets: the sock-eating plants Stanley (the title character) and Fluffy.
