Yet this intertwined mystery that has readers figuring out Jessica’s murderer and Kay’s secrets (and their possible connections) is more than these clichés. The debut novel has all the tropes one would expect from a prep school mystery: plenty of backstabbing, predominantly white young socialites (except for Brie with “smooth brown skin”), and frequent parties with alcohol and sex. There, Kay receives instructions to take down all her friends-this one for doping, that one for sleeping with a professor-or her own secrets will be revealed. As she, her friends, and other acquaintances begin answering questions for the police, the teen also receives an email from Jessica’s account that takes her to a revenge website. But it’s not the first time Kay has seen a dead body-and someone knows it. ![]() When Kay Donovan and her popular senior classmates uphold the tradition of skinny dipping in the lake after the Halloween dance, they’re surprised to find the dead body of Jessica Lane, a fellow student. For others, attending the elite prep school means getting killed. For some girls, it’s a killer getting into Bates Academy. ![]() 5/13/2023 0 Comments Renee ahdieh the damned![]() ![]() ![]() The decision to center The Damned on Bastien rather than Celine was interesting. It’s definitely a lot to take in, which is why I wish Ahdieh had included more worldbuilding in The Beautiful, especially since this wider lens came at the cost of the more potent character relationships in The Damned. The world is fleshed out through a greater amount of unique character perspectives, and the more knowledgeable perspective of Bastien that dominates the novel. We learn about the Otherworld, which remains a murky, ever-present force driving formerly unknown character motivations till the end. The actual historical NOLA backdrop is still lacking, though. In The Damned, Ahdieh inundates the reader with background information about rivalries and loyalties among the fey, vampires, and werewolves. The worldbuilding in The Beautiful was basically nonexistent, which was rather unfortunate, but understandable, considering the majority of the book was from Celine’s perspective when she was unaware of the paranormal of New Orleans. ![]() 5/13/2023 0 Comments Fantastic beasts by jk rowling![]() ![]() The first Fantastic Beasts will be in UK cinemas from Friday.
